How to do the tool: I hear so many people tell me they can't draw or they’re not artistic. And so often they don't try or pursue their creative ability, that is inherant in all of us.

I started drawing, not because I wanted to be good at art but because I wanted to express myself.

Cartoon picture of two spoons - one being me

This is the first cartoon I drew in 2010. I was getting a spoon for breakfast at work. All the spoons were the same except this one spoon that looked really different. So I picked up the spoon and as I walked back to my desk I looked at the spoon and thought 'that's me that is'. I didn't really know what that thought meant but I had an urge to draw it.

So I downloaded the Pages App on my iPad and drew the spoon. I've been drawing cartoons ever since. And I've had no real desire to learn how to draw properly. I like to keep my cartoons simple because whenever I try to draw properly or technically, it always takes away from the original message I am trying to express and portray.

I moved from iPad drawing to drawing on a Wacom Intuos Pro Sketch pad attached to my computer and using Adobe Ilustrator. I got this idea from my gardener of all people. By a stroke of luck, he used to work in printing. I told him I was frustrated because whenever I printed my images they got distorted. And he told me that's becuase iPads use pixelated imagery (dots that distort the bigger you print) so he suggested I try Adobe Illustrator that uses vector imagery. Vector images print the same no matter how large the picture.

It's been fun, a learning and a journey. I’m not an artist but I'm an artist if you get my drift. And you can be too. Creativity is an essential part of human nature. It can dissipate difficult feelings. It's a form of relaxation. It can switch you off from a busy life and a busy mind.
